Summer Term

This term, children in class four will explore their local area, Carlisle, through a local geography and history unit. We will explore Carlisle through the ages using historical maps, ordamance survey and digital maps and satellite images.  This will be a cross curricular unit aimed at developing key skills in the following subjects:

An exploration into the formation and development of Carlisle and surrounding areas.  We will investigate changing land use and explore some of Carlisle's famous landmarks and look at how these have changed over the years.

We will be stepping back in time to explore what life in Carlisle was like to live and work in over 100 years ago.

We will explore watercolor paints and some of the painting techniques used to create different backwash effects. Children will apply the new techniques learnt to help them paint their own watercolor scene of a Carlisle landscape or skyline.

In English, our focus this term in the run-up to the Key Stage One SATs is Grammar In Action!  Using quality texts, we will investigate the use and rules of grammar in familiar and much-loved picture books.   Post SATs, our focus will turn to letter writing.  Using Emily Gravett's Meerkat Mail as a stimulus, children will identify the key features of a formal letter and use these features to write their own letter home from Sunny, the globe-trotting meerkat.  We will continue our investigation into performance Poetry  using Roger McGough's famous poem, The Sound Collector.

This term, children will exploring forces and magnets.  Through a series of planned practical investigations, we will explore, describe and compare the effects of simple forces (push, pull, friction) and find out how magnets work and shape our world.   To ensure children continue to develop their scientific enquiry skills, they will be given opportunities to plan and carry out their own investigations.
