Election 2015

To mark this year's General Election, Class 5 learned about how democratic elections work.  We looked at the purpose o an election and the processes that are gone through in the election of a new government.  We also learned what a 'hung parliament' is.

To put our learning into contexte we held a school election.  Children volunteered to stand as candidates so we first had to hold a secret ballot to select our four candidates.  They then had to have their nomination forms sign before they could officially stand for election.  Each candidate rallied their supporters and formed a party.  The candidates and parties were as follows.

Dominic Burns - The Fridge Raiders

Leah Hanson - The Chatterboxes

Eve Mary Longrigg - Ligitimately Awesome

Charlie McDill - Purple Party.

Each party had to decide on a manifesto focusing on the things they would like to see changed in school and then write a speech persuading people to vote for them.  Posters and rosettes were produced and a good deal of canvassing went on around school over the week.

Finally, on election day, 7th May each candidate made a speech to the whole school.  Every member of the school community had a ballot paper and made their vote.  At 3pm the returning office declared Dominic Burns elected.

The candidates and their parties all did a brilliant job.  The speeches were well planned and made and we were very impressed.  I think there is a future in politics for some of our young people.

Well done everyone.  Watch our youtube links for the candidates speeches.
